Celebrating Earth Day with Ergonomics
By Leslie Woodruff
Friday was Earth Day 2022. This morning I heard in the news that we are heading in the right direction. That's good news, but we have a long way to go! Look around your area right now. Do you see ways to reduce your carbon footprint ergonomically?
Andrew Thatcher, Associate Professor at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa states that green ergonomics explores the connection of humans with nature and how nature facilitates well-being, health, productivity and effectiveness. What are some of the ways green ergonomics can be helpful in the workplace?
Provide natural lighting in work areas whenever possible. In numerous studies, natural lighting has been shown to improve worker satisfaction and productivity. It reduces eye strain, improves moods, and workers make fewer mistakes and have reported less drowsiness.
Improve indoor air quality with plants. Some of the best air purifying plants are Peace Lillies, Spider Plants, Golden Pothos, and for some color, Chrysanthemums! Plants also stabilize humidity levels and have been shown to reduce the symptoms of SBS (sick building syndrome).
Utilizing renewable energy efficient office components are just a few ways to create a more sustainable work environment. For example, ergonomic, eco-sourced chairs, mats and desks provide employees a healthy atmosphere which, in turn, creates more productivity.
The following furniture manufacturers have documented environmental certifications and commitments to sustainability:
· HON
· Steelcase
· Fully
· Haworth
· Knoll
· Branch
Remember to consider the long term when purchasing furniture. Furniture with shorter warranties will probably end up in a landfill sooner.
